How many sessions a week do I need to do?

This depends on your current fitness level, your motivation, what you want to achieve and how soon you need to achieve it. From my experience I would suggest one session a week minimum, but ideally two. BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF ABOUT HOW MUCH WORK YOU WILL DO ON YOUR OWN!

What do I need to wear?

Anything that is comfortable to begin with as you are in a private gym. For the long term however it is vital that you have the right foot-wear and that they are replaced on a regular basis.

Do I have to run? Do I have to stop drinking alcohol?!

No and No. Your first session is a fitness test to see what you can/can't do, and what you will/won't do. The trick then is to devise a fitness plan which can be adapted over time to become a part of your new lifestyle. Yes this will be challenging but it has to be realistic and fun (ish!) if it is to work long term.

I am 40 overweight and exercise never works for me

Exercise does work. It burns calories aiding weight loss, improves muscle tone and enhances posture. To say nothing of strengthening your heart, lungs and joints, reducing stress and giving you heaps more stamina.

What you have not yet found is an exercise plan that works for you. When you have you are more likely to work out regularly and at an intensity that is required. This needs to be done in concert with possible changes in your diet. It has taken 40 years to achieve your current body shape and you must look at long term changes to your lifestyle if you are to be successful.
